HR Consultancy Services

Small businesses, and those that are growing, generally do not require a full time HR role, but however small a business is, it still has employees and with those come obligations, some legal, some just good business sense.

Jacob’s Ladder Consulting Ltd aim to provide HR support and advice on either on a case by case basis or on a retained basis. We can provide policies, procedures, employment documents and even training sessions if required.

Primarily working across the Hertfordshire, Essex, London and Cambridgeshire areas we offer a face to face first meeting for no charge to discuss the scope of your requirements and to help us understand your business. Charges are then made based on the scope of your requirements, there is no minimum amount of work required. It can also be possible, if location or time does not allow, to have this meeting over a telephone call.

Further to the initial discussion held with you we can provide a specific policy, procedure, course or advice for a one off cost. We can also be engaged on a retained basis, for a set fee you can have an agreed number of hours per year for advice or policy work including regular employment law updates to ensure you are remaining legally compliant in the ever-changing world of employment legislation. We aim to be as flexible as possible to ensure we meet your needs and support your business to be the best it can be.

Below is a selection of the services we offer:

[accordions] [accordion title=”Recruitment”]

As a business grows it will need to recruit more frequently, and also will experience staff turnover. We can provide advice on creating Job Descriptions, Person Specifications and advertising through to creating interview questions and scoring systems if required.

When you recruit for certain roles you may wish to identify whether an individual has a particular skill or ability and we can work with you to create work sampling exercises that will allow candidates to practically demonstrate whether they have those skills.

After offering a candidate a role we can create reference request templates for you and help with analysing results of those returned.

Contracts of Employment

Every employee needs a contract of employment or written statement of particulars including some key components. We can create a template for you to use and also provide bespoke clauses for certain levels of employee, for example non-compete clauses or confidentiality clauses. We can also provide offer letters prior to the issue of a contract.

[/accordion] [accordion title=”Policies & Procedures”]

At a certain point in time, every business will need to consider having written policies and procedures in place such as:

  • Disciplinary Process, including examples of misconduct
  • Grievance Procedures
  • Maternity & Paternity Policies
  • Flexible Working Policies, including request process

Whilst the above are governed by an employee’s statutory rights, each policy or procedure can be tailored to your business, for example using terminology that is relevant to your employees or a process that fits with the way your business runs.

It may also be helpful to employees and line managers to document and circulate written guidance on:

The above again may be shaped by statutory rights, but can be created to reflect the ethos and aims of your business.

We will work with you to draft documents that are user friendly and keep you legally compliant.

Employee Handbooks

You may wish to create an Employee Handbook branded directly to your business rather than a set of individual policies and we can support in the generation of this.

There may be times where you need to resolve conflict or a form of misconduct within the business, we can provide advice and guidance on how to handle these cases before they reach a legal challenge at Employment Tribunal. We can help you manage a case, hopefully to a positive outcome, even in the absence of a policy at that point in time.

Who are the key players in your business? Who are the ones to watch, the ones you wish to promote in the future and retain? How do you keep them motivated? What happens if someone resigns, who will fill the gap? These situations can become urgent if you do not take some time to consider the implications. We can help you evaluate your workforce and identify key or critical roles or individuals in your business. We can also support with restructures or redundancy if required.

Line managers may need to take on more day-to-day line management as a business grows and may find themselves recruiting, implementing appraisal or bonus schemes, or unfortunately needing to deal with disciplinary or sickness issues. Working with you and your policies we can provide full or half day sessions coaching line managers through how to practically apply those policies and dealing with those “what if” scenarios that may arise.

These sessions can be held on or off site according to your preference.  We are also happy to provide sessions supporting policies or procedures not created by Jacob’s Ladder Consulting Ltd.

You may wish to acquire another business or part of your business may transfer to another, we can help you understand what your role is in either situation and carry out the due diligence and work involved in the transfer.
